During my time teaching Art Design, I had the privilege of exploring philosophies that extended well beyond the confines of the classroom. Several students created sculptures as their final projects, beautifully illustrating their deep concern for issues more significant than themselves. These pieces catalysed meaningful discussions, encouraging students to reflect on the interconnectedness of art and the world around us. Witnessing how art can evoke a sense of responsibility and empathy in both the creators and the viewers was inspiring.
After leaving this wonderful school in South Surrey, I received several thoughtful gifts from appreciative students. One of these gifts was a wall-mounted bottle opener, which is fantastic because it's placed near my braai, ensuring I'm always prepared. Another gift was a sculpture that we now display at our front door. It serves as a reminder that "People are Everything." The artist showcased his talent through this piece, conveying an important message I emphasize daily: be kind, be kinder, and be the kindest!
Watching my friends and students reach their goals is profoundly fulfilling. It’s a feeling that many teachers can relate to. The joy of seeing those we care about succeed becomes a source of inspiration and pride. In a way, we live vicariously through their accomplishments, celebrating each milestone. These connections can make saying goodbye and moving forward difficult at times.
